Dr. Nobby Chipo Mambo

Dr. Nobby Chipo Mambo, 74, passed away on November 18, 2018. He was born on July 1, 1944, in Harare, Zimbabwe, the first born son in a family of five boys and one girl. As a young boy he served in church and was once a Sunday school teacher. He was truly an humble, responsible and respectful child whom everyone admired. He completed his primary education at Mbizi Primary School and Tsungai Primary School in Highfield. He completed “O” level secondary school at St. Augustine’s Mission in the village of Penhalonga in Manicaland, and “A” levels at Goromonzi High School, in the Goromonzi district. He studied medicine at the former University College of Rhodesia and graduated with Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degrees from the Huggins School of Medicine. He immigrated to Canada, and while there and in the United States, he furthered his medical education, completing the requirements and certifications needed to become a Forensic Pathologist. During his career he published 17 research publications in various fields of medicine. At the time of his death, Dr. Mambo was a MD Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He was also Deputy Chief Medical Examiner at the Galveston County Medical Examiner's Office. Dr. Mambo loved teaching, and was very dedicated to his colleagues and career. He inspired many students over the years. He was still teaching and working well into his illness. In his early forties Nobby took up golf. In a short period of time, he became passionate and accomplished at the game, forging many lasting friendships through his love of the sport. The Wednesday Busch League during his time in Saskatchewan and his annual trip to Waskesiu Lake, for the Men’s Lobstick Tournament, were two of the golfing events he loved the most. The latter continued for nearly thirty years. The list of friends Nobby made through golf is extensive and far reaching. There will be a void created by his absence at these events in the future. He was also an avid tennis player. Cooking was also a passion of Nobby’s. He was well known for his delicious short rib recipe. Dr. Mambo was charismatic,fun-loving and worldly. He had numerous friends throughout the various places he lived and worked and will be missed by all. He is survived by two sons: Kevin and Muchi.
